4 Signs You May Need Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium posts placed into the jawbone to serve as the roots of replacement teeth. They are often the most highly recommended teeth replacement solution due to the unique benefits that they provide over alternative solutions, such as removable dentures and fixed bridges.

When to consider dental implants

The three primary options that patients have after they lose one or more teeth are dentures, fixed bridges, and dental implants. Each offers its own benefits. The following are four signs that indicate a need to replace teeth, along with insights into why and when dental implants are the best options for teeth replacement.

One or more missing teeth

It is encouraged to replace missing teeth as soon as possible after they become lost. Otherwise, bone loss in the jaw can occur as a result of atrophy. If the teeth are replaced early enough, the patient may be able to avoid the need for a bone graft procedure before the placement of the dental implants. Dental implants are great at replacing one tooth, a section of teeth, or an entire row of missing teeth by attaching the appropriate restorations to the implants. Common restorations that attach to implants include a crown, bridge (partial denture), or complete denture.

Severely weakened teeth

Teeth that are severely weakened may not be able to be saved through restorations such as dental crown placement. When teeth are beyond the point of repair, it is best to have the tooth extracted and replaced with a dental implant (or another type of teeth replacement restoration). Teeth may become weakened as a result of cavities, teeth damage from dental trauma, and gum disease.

Issues with dentures or fixed bridge

Many patients initially choose a denture or fixed bridge for teeth replacement instead of dental implants because they are more affordable and the processes are shorter. However, many older patients desire to switch to dental implants. Anyone who is not happy with their dentures or fixed bridge makes an ideal dental implants candidate. The dental team can remove the current restoration and replace it with a dental implant. However, a bone graft procedure may be necessary before doing so.

A desire for the most natural-like teeth replacement solution

Dental implants look, feel, and function similar to a person’s natural teeth. The implants are placed in the jaw and serve a similar role as the roots of natural teeth. Therefore, those who desire the most natural solution for replacing their missing teeth should strongly consider dental implants instead of dentures or a fixed bridge.
